LAST WEEK, THE internet banded together to locate Dancing Man, a man who was photographed dancing and subsequently body shamed.
After the image went viral on 4Chan, LA-based writer @CassandraRules launched a campaign to find the man and vowed to throw a dance party in his honour.
The man was soon identified as a Londoner named Sean. He set up the Twitter account @Dancingmanfound and seems delighted by the whole thing.
Since then, the whole saga has escalated.
A funding campaign was set up to bring the man to Los Angeles for a dance party extravaganza. The initial $20,000 goal was quickly surpassed and the running total currently stands at $33,227.
The organisers have pledged to donate all additional money raised to an anti-bullying campaign and have been touched by the response to the campaign, which has clearly struck a chord with people all over the world.
When we saw the world’s response throughout the night – it became clear this was bigger than us, bigger than him, and the start of a beautiful wave of solidarity against bullying, against body-shaming, and an inspiration to #Dancefree in our own bodies.
As for the proposed dance party? Oh, it’s on.
LA Memorial Coliseum has offered up its space for the party.
Pharrell wants to go.
So does Andrew WK.
And Ellie Goulding has offered to perform.
You might see HAIM there, too.
And Moby.
Meanwhile, Susan Sarandon had this lovely response to the whole thing.
